Highland rallied to defeat Desert Vista 4-3 Thursday afternoon. They got out to a 1-0 after two innings, but after giving up 3 runs in the top of the 3rd, took some time to rally back. They scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th to tie it, and eventually scored 1 more in the bottom of the 7th for a walk off victory.
The star offensively was Mason Greenman on Thursday. He went 2 for 2 with a double and added 2 walks, reaching base in all four plate appearances. He was pulled for a pinch runner in the bottom of the 7th, and that runner was Highland’s eventual winning run.
A few other players really came through for the team when the time mattered. Jon Brown had a sacrifice fly in the 2nd to put Highland on the board, Cooper Brown successfully laid down a sacrifice bunt with 2 on and nobody out in the 7th, and the next batter, Luke Groenendaal, hit a sacrifice fly to right field to win the game for us. A few selfless plays to lead Highland to victory.
Luke Groenendaal got the start and was able to go 2 2/3 innings, giving up 3 unearned runs, but the errors and lack of efficiency made his outing a little shorter than desired. Aaron Alder came in and took the team the rest of the way. After coming in with the bases loaded and two outs, Alder struck out his first batter to end the inning and never looked back. He went 4 1/3 innings, giving up 0 runs on 3 hits, while striking out 4 en route to the victory.
Highland’s next game comes Friday when they travel to take on Desert Ridge.
